New advertising restrictions for online gambling in Ontario

The legislator in the Canadian province Ontario has adopted a law that will restrict the advertising for online gambling services. The restrictions are not limited to any form of media (print, online, broadcast, radio,..), but are limited to instances where the advertising originates in Ontario or is primarily intended for Ontario residents.

The restrictions also applies to the linking of gambling websites on other websites, although the links produced by search engines will not fall under the restrictions. It is expected that both websites and search engines will use geo-location technologies to define whether gambling websites are targeting Ontaria, in which case they will block the link.
