Consultations on Vietnam gaming law

The government of Vietnam is preparing a law that would legalise lotteries and sports betting. It justifies the legalisation of gambling by its desire to fight the massive illegal gambling.

Illegal gambling has particularly taken a flow in recent years with the increasing availability of sports images through satellite and internet. Operators are often foreign betting rings based in Hong Kong and Thailand.

Although there has not been a formal legalisation of gambling, some forms of gambling have already been tolerated, like betting on horseracing. There are even a great number of state-owned lottery companies, which are believed to generate an annual turnover of US$312 million.
