New York to legalise online betting

The New York legislature adopted an Internet wagering bill on 20 June, which will legalise intra-state betting on horseracing through Internet. The law will have to be approved by the state Governor and would get into effect only in June 2009.

The law is supported by by the state’s off track betting corporations, who expect the Internet wagering to replace the more costly telephone placed wagering.

All protections now in place with telephone wagering will be extended to the Internet, such as banning bets paid for by credit card.
